Professional Background:

Raymond H. Puffer, Jr. received his bachelor's degree in 1968 from the United States Military Academy and his MSME from Colorado State University in 1975. He is also a graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff and the Defense Systems Management College. Ray is a registered professional engineer and a certified acquisition manager. Mr. Puffer has served over twelve years as Associate Director of the New York State Center for Automation Technologies (CAT) located at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. 

Prior to joining the CAT he completed more than twenty years service as an army officer, progressing to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and holding key technical and managerial positions. Among his assignments are: four years as an associate professor and course director for Weapon Systems Engineering and Automotive Systems Engineering at West Point; three years as a research and development coordinator on a major system development and acquisition program; and a tour as the Deputy Commander of a major manufacturing arsenal (Watervliet Arsenal). Ray’s research is in the area of manufacturing process automation.

Since joining Rensselaer, Ray has successfully led numerous projects for industrial clients, including: Artisan Textiles, Albany, NY; Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY; Celanese Ventures, GmbH, Frankfurt, Germany; Crouse-Hinds Airport Lighting Products, Windsor, CT; Delphi Automotive Systems, Lockport, NY; Frederick Goldman, Inc., New York, NY; Loop-Loc, Ltd., Hauppauge, NY; Martial Arts Innovations, Slingerlands, NY; Mueller-Phipps International, Poughkeepsie, NY; Penn Racquet Sports, Phoenix, AZ; Sequins International, New York, NY; and Tiffany & Co., New York, NY; and many other small manufacturing companies.
